Marcos Rojo doesn’t blame Jose Mourinho for Manchester United game time

Marcos Rojo has spoken publicly about his severe lack of game time after returning from injury at Manchester United last season.

Rojo made his return from an anterior cruciate ligament on 22 November in the Champions League defeat at Basel, and went on to make just 12 appearances.

Jose Mourinho used Chris Smalling and Phil Jones as his first-choice centre-back partnership throughout the 2017-18 campaign as Eric Bailly also suffered from injury struggles and Victor Lindelof was still adapting to life in England.

Rojo’s minimal minutes on the pitch, less than 1000 to be slightly precise, has sparked speculation that the Argentine was likely to leave the club this summer, especially with Mourinho reportedly targeting a new centre-back during the transfer window.

Speaking to Argentinian newspaper Ole, translated by Sports Witness, Rojo said: “I can’t blame him (Mourinho), but at the end of the season, with fear, I went to talk to him and ask him what was going on.

“He told me there were several in situations similar to mine, and he was going to put the one in who was better.”

The 28-year-old will be hoping to impress Mourinho with Argentina at the World Cup which kicks off in Russia next week ahead of a season surely bound to be more enjoyable than the one just gone.
