Phlippe Lamboley, the agent of Anthony Martial, has confirmed that the forward wishes to leave Manchester United this summer.
The decision comes after failing to agree terms for a contract extension following months of negotiations and a frustrating end to the 2017-18 season.
Martial was arguably one of the highest performing players at Man United in the first half of the campaign before Jose Mourinho decided to sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in the January transfer window.
The Chilean’s arrival crushed Martial’s game time, and happiness, which has resulted in the player deciding to depart Old Trafford in the coming months.
Lamboley told French outlet RMC:: “After thinking about all the possibilities, Anthony wants to leave Manchester United. There are many possibilities, for now it is premature to talk about.
“United wants to extend Anthony and does not want him to leave but we do not find agreement for several months.
“I think when United, the most powerful club in the world, is not in agreement in eight months of negotiations, it’s that they don’t really want to make him an important player in the team. This is why the decision has come.
“It is a deliberate decision. It is clear and it is very important to remember that he is under contract, Manchester United have the last word and that we will respect the decision of the club, he will go after his commitment.”
Martial’s contract expires at the end of next season so if he is dead-set on going elsewhere in the current transfer window, United will be very keen to sell in order to prevent the risk of their £36m signing leaving for nothing.
The 22-year-old has turned into a fan favourite in the stands and all over the world during his three seasons in Manchester, and his agent has admitted that if it wasn’t for the love from supporters he would have left earlier.
“We do not have the same vision on the future of Anthony. Today, Anthony is disappointed because he demonstrated for three seasons his love for the club and its supporters.
“Anthony just wants to play, find fun, the feeling with the coach will be crucial. I can tell you that without the unconditional support of the fans, Anthony would have already asked to leave United.
“It is important to remember that this season he scored 11 goals and provided ten assists in five months. He was elected three times players of the month by the fans. Then came the January transfer window.
“I will not comment on the consequences of the January transfer window. Everyone will have their opinion, I think we need to resume his career. The time has come.”
The news comes as a shock to many, and is a huge shame considering the amount of potential Martial carries whenever he steps on a football pitch.
Now the debate will start; who does Martial play for when August rolls around?
Premier League duo Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are said to be interested in the Frenchman whilst Barcelona and Juventus have also been placed into the picture in recent months.
Wherever he ends up, it’s a colossal loss for United.
