Jose Mourinho has sparked rumours of Manchester United’s interest in Russia star Aleksandr Golovin after praising the player’s performance against Saudi Arabia in the World Cup.
The midfielder was linked with a move to Old Trafford previously and it certainly didn’t help things that the Portuguese manager enjoyed what he saw of the player on Thursday.
Golovin was amongst the European nation’s top performers on the opening night’s match for the World Cup which ended in a 5-0 victory for the hosts.
Mourinho is currently in Moscow helping cover the world’s biggest tournament in football and so was asked his opinion on the playmaker.
Aleksandr definitely caught the eye of viewers and at the young age of 22 still has plenty more of potential in him if he continues to develop.
According to Caught Offside, Jose said to RT: “I think Alan Dzagoev was playing quite well but when he came out (injured), the fact that Golovin could go to a more central position, I think it helped the team.
“The team became better. Golovin is a playmaker, he’s a player that gives the dynamic of the team. Denis Cheryshev is a fast boy on the wing, more of a winger than Golovin, stretch the game more than Golovin, so I think the change worked perfectly.”
The Red Devils recently completed the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred as a replacement to the retired Michael Carrick but Marouane Fellaini‘s potential departure on a free has meant there’s still a need to sign another midfielder.
Golovin is seen as the ideal investment as he wouldn’t be an immediate starter but would provide competition to the Brazilian, Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic next season for United.
