Jose Mourinho speaks effusively about Croatia midfielders Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic

Jose Mourinho has spoken highly of Croatia midfield duo Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic following their comprehensive display against Argentina on Thursday night.

The pair controlled the game and moved the ball beautifully, ensuring Argentina never created any momentum in a game they had to win.

Both ended up on the scoresheet, with Modric firing home a wonder-strike in the second half before Rakitic rounded off the win by rolling the ball into an empty net.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho, who will now look for a second midfield signing after Fred was announced on Thursday, was clearly in awe of the quality in Croatia’s midfield.

“Croatia is a team with some talented experienced players that play in the best clubs in the world… especially in that midfield, the best in the world,” he said.

The 55-year-old is a big admirer of Modric, signing him for Real Madrid in 2012, and expressed interest in securing the services of Rakitic last summer, only for the Croat to ultimately sign a new deal at the Nou Camp.

Mateo Kovacic, who came on to turn the screw against a hapless Argentina, has also been a figure of interest to Mourinho and may be available in the summer having struggled for minutes last season.
