Jose Mourinho will turn his attention towards signing a young box-to-box midfielder after securing the services of Fred on Thursday, according to reports.
Maroaune Fellaini’s impending departure from the club combined with Michael Carrick‘s retirement has created the need for Manchester United to make two additions to their midfield this summer.
The club had expressed interest in Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who fits the profile perfectly, but dropped their pursuit of the Serbian after balking at his valuation (said to be around £100m).
But according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, Mourinho will nonetheless look to sign a player with a similar skill-set ahead of the 2018/19 as he looks to reenergise his midfield.
Securing the services of Milinkovic-Savic, who wouldn’t even be a starter given Mourinho’s preference for Fred to balance the midfield, is next to impossible but the club have expressed confidence in signing Lorenzo Pellegrini from Roma instead.
The 22-year-old’s impressive engine and smart close control has clearly impressed Mourinho, whose midfield options last season, namely Ander Herrera, Fellaini and Scott McTominay, often failed to match Paul Pogba’s sophistication on the ball.
Mateo Kovacic, Tanguy Ndombele and Aleksandr Golovin are all other options who would be considerably cheaper than launching a bid for Milinkovic-Savic.
