Manchester United’s chances of signing Gareth Bale this summer have diminished, with the Welshman expected to make a return to Real Madrid for pre-season training next week, according to reports.
The winger made it clear following his match-winning performance in the Champions League final that he wanted to be starting games next season, prompting widespread rumours that he would leave the Bernabeu.
Jose Mourinho is among those who admire Bale, stating last summer that he would make an attempt to sign him should he opt for a move away.
But according to the Mirror‘s Alex Richards, the winger is looking increasingly likely to stay at Madrid for another season.
The departure of Zinedine Zidane and arrival of Julen Lopetegui as manager, combined with the recent news of Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer to Juventus, has significantly changed the landscape at Real since Bale was left on the bench for the Champions League final.
He will now focus on battling his way back into the starting XI at Real and prove to his manager that, with Ronaldo now gone, the leading role in attack can be entrusted to him. His last appearance for Los Blancos, and of course what he said afterwards, certainly sent a message.
