Manchester United given encouragement in their pursuit of Toby Alderweireld – report

Manchester United have been told by Tottenham Hotspur that they can sign Toby Alderweireld this summer for the right price, according to reports.

The club’s initial pursuit of Alderweireld came to nothing after Man United balked at Tottenham’s £79m valuation of the defender.

Jose Mourinho has placed emphasis on securing another central defender before the window ends and Alderweireld, whose contract expires at the end of next season, remains top of his list.

And according to Yahoo Sport‘s Kevin Palmer, Tottenham have reopened the door for United to sign Alderweireld, noting they would be prepared to sell him for the right price.

Tottenham’s initial valuation of Alderweireld – having hardly played for Spurs last season – was nothing short of laughable. No player with a contract expiring in less than a year can be realistically sold for that much. It’s just not how transfers work.

And with Alderweireld at loggerheads with the club, who are refusing to meet his wage demands and will not hand him a new deal in response, it is only a matter of time before he departs the club. Mourinho, on the other hand, will hopefully get this deal over the line quickly and start working towards signing a left-back before the window shuts in less than a month.
