Four Manchester United players star in World Cup third place play-off

Several Manchester United stars are free to go on their holidays and rest up ahead of the new season after completing their international duties in the 2018 World Cup third place play-off.

The match in Saint Petersburg was played out between England and Belgium, both originally in Group G, after losing to Croatia and France respectively in the semi-finals.

Roberto Martinez’ Belgium ran out 2-0 winners through goals from Thomas Meunier and Eden Hazard, with four of Man United’s six representatives from each squad featuring.

Phil Jones, whose only other appearance in the tournament came against Belgium in the group stage, was joined by Romelu Lukaku in starting on the pitch.

Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini, who have both enjoyed great tournaments, were unused substitutes while Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford came off the England bench at half-time.

The members of Jose Mourinho’s United squad currently in Manchester will jet off to the USA on Sunday along with new coaches Michael Carrick, Kieran McKenna and Stefano Rapetti.

Those who have been representing their nations in Russia will have more time off to recover on holiday before linking up with their club team-mates in America at a later date.

United kick-off their pre-season campaign against Club America in Pheonix on Friday.
