Manchester United are reportedly ready to launch a lucrative pursuit for Leicester City defender Harry Maguire after his inspired performances for England at the 2018 World Cup.
Maguire has featured on the left side of a back three in Gareth Southgate’s 3-1-4-2 system and was ever-present in all six of England’s games as they reached the semi-finals for the first time in 28 years.
The centre-back is expected to star in the final match of the campaign, a third and fourth place play-off against Belgium on Saturday night, before going on a well-earned holiday ahead of the 2018-19 domestic season.
He’s also expected to resume talks with Leicester regarding an improved contract at the King Power Stadium, however, The Daily Mail report that Man United are planning a swoop for his services.
United are said to be impressed with Maguire’s displays at the summer tournament and could offer up to £50m to add him to Jose Mourinho’s defensive ranks, but Leicester’s Thai owners are ready to fight for him and are lining up a new deal worth £80,000-per-week.
It’s no secret that United have made a new centre-back their priority ahead of the new campaign, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones‘ futures unclear and Marcos Rojo‘s injury proneness, and the 25-year-old may have shot up to the top of the target list.
At this moment, it’s expected he’ll continue contract talks and stay at Leicester, but if United’s interest becomes more concrete we may behind seeing a Maguire-Eric Bailly partnership at the back next term.
