Manchester United have opened negotiations with Bayern Munich regarding a deal for centre-back Jerome Boateng before Thursday’s summer transfer deadline, according to reports in Germany on Sunday night.
The 29-year-old played the second half as Bayern defeated Man United 1-0 at the Allianz Arena in what was Jose Mourinho’s side’s final pre-season friendly before the 2018-19 campaign.
They could be the last minutes Boateng, who is thought to be looking to leave in the near future, plays for the Bundesliga champions though with United reportedly upping their interest.
BILD journalist Christian Falk claims that United ‘contacted’ Bayern over the transfer of Boateng earlier on Sunday which could mean discussions are well underway.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has been thought to be Mourinho’s no. 1 choice in the position he’s prioritised strengthening this summer, however Spurs’ valuation has seen talks stumble on a number of occasions.
Leicester City’s Harry Maguire is also on Mourinho’s shortlist along with Colombia international Yerry Mina, but now there seems to be a new name in the fold.
United fans would be gasping at the chance to sign a player of Boateng’s magnitude a few years ago but the Germany international has shown large signs of slowing down over the past couple of seasons and there are probably better options out there.
The club have just over four days to get business done.
