Willian has been one of Jose Mourinho’s primary targets for the right wing position this summer, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be leaving Chelsea anytime soon.
The 29-year-old’s toxic relationship with manager Antonio Conte seemed like it all-but confirmed his Stamford Bridge departure until the controversial Italian was swapped out for another, former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri.
Although Willian didn’t start Sunday’s Community Shield match against Manchester City, a 2-0 defeat, he is thought to be in Sarri’s plans for his debut season in charge.
Speaking ahead of the clash at Wembley Stadium, the Brazil international put speculation regarding a move away firmly to rest: “I’ve always told him I’m really happy playing for Chelsea. I’ve never talked about leaving the club.”
So what now for Manchester United?
Well, in all honesty it seems rather unlikely Mourinho will be getting the right-sided attacker he’s been wanting all summer long before this week’s transfer deadline.
Internazionale’s Ivan Perisic has also been said to be on the top of his shortlist, as has Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale, but the current options may have to do for now.
Man United’s pursuit of a new central defender is still underway though, and it’s like one of Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld, Leicester City’s Harry Maguire, Barcelona’s Yerry Mina or Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng will arrive before Thursday evening.
