Jose Mourinho confirms several absentees for Leicester City opener

Jose Mourinho has revealed that several key players will be missing in Friday’s Premier League opener against Leicester City at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have been hit by injuries throughout the pre-season tour of the United States and there are plenty of first-team stars that have only just returned from their holidays due to exploits in the World Cup this summer.

Mourinho has admitted this morning that he is “not confident” of any new arrivals before tonight’s 5pm transfer deadline so he’ll have to work with what he’s got as Claude Puel’s Leicester visit Old Trafford.

Speaking to MUTV on the eve of the 2018-19 season getting underway, the Man United manager provided a list of those who will miss the start of the new campaign through injury.

He revealed: “No miracles. [Sergio] Romero, [Antonio] Valencia, Marcos Rojo, [Diogo] Dalot, Ander Herrera, [Nemanja] Matic [are injured] and I think that’s it.”

Mourinho did confirm that Alexis Sanchez, who was a highlight for United over pre-season, is fit and firing though.

“The players with a proper pre-season are fit and they are strong. For example, Alexis Sanchez had a good pre-season with lots of matches and lots of minutes.

Stars such as Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku all returned to Carrington to begin training this week, but they won’t be ready to make appearances.

“[Alexis is] more than ready but you cannot have the players who arrived only last Monday after the World Cup semi-finals or final and three weeks’ holiday. You cannot expect them to be fit.”

United may be hit with injuries but they will be hoping to start the season with a win rather than immediately losing ground on their title rivals.
