Jose Mourinho has dealt Manchester United fans a huge blow by confirming that he doesn’t expect any new signings on transfer deadline day.
Mourinho has wanted a central defender all summer but the summer transfer window deadline being brought forward this year has resulted in many clubs running out of time to do crucial business.
A whole group of names have been linked with moves to Man United, as usual, this summer as the club have prioritised the arrival of a new central defender ahead of the 2018-19 season.
The United manager has admitted this morning that he isn’t confident of any signings to bolster his defensive options before the new campaign gets underway tomorrow though.
“I am not confident [of any new arrivals]. The market closes today. It is time for me to stop thinking about the market. I have to focus on the players I have and the next few matches.”
When asked whether he expects any transfer activity before tonight’s 5pm deadline, Mourinho confirmed what supporters have feared: “My information is no.”
Leicester City’s Harry Maguire and Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld have been the two players most heavily linked with transfers over the transfer period, whilst Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng and Barcelona’s Yerry Mina are also thought as targets.
It looks like it could be a quiet day at United though and Mourinho will have to go into the Premier League opener against Leicester with what he’s got.
There’s still a long way to go today though, so keep the faith!
