Manchester United star Chris Smalling believes the club can challenge for the title if they can show more consistency than last season.
It’s a relatively straightforward statement with fans complaining they couldn’t tell which team would show up to matches during the last campaign.
United destroyed some opponents one week and suffered shock losses the next week much to the frustrations of the supporters.
If Smalling and co can truly show more maturity and the right mental attitude this upcoming season then they can certainly pick up more points.
The lack of signings this summer doesn’t seem to have upset the Englishman in comparison to Alexis Sanchez who was hopeful for new faces.
According to Manchester Evening News, Chris said to MUTV: “I think it is that consistency really. Last year we showed against the top teams our record was very good.
“It’s about not slipping up in the games we dominate, this year is all about consistency.”
Smalling was one of Jose Mourinho’s more reliable players last season but the hopes are he fails to do this campaign.
Manchester United fans have accepted that since a new, proven centre-back couldn’t be signed then Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof have to be given the chance to develop.
The pair were originally signed by Mourinho to former a partnership in the club’s defence but failed to do so thus far.
This season provides the perfect opportunity for Bailly and Lindelof to stake a claim in the starting XI if they can remain fit.
