Video: Wayne Rooney scores superb brace to help DC United to victory

Wayne Rooney continued to make his mark on the MLS with a superb brace for DC United in a 4-1 win over Portland.

Manchester United’s all time top goalscorer joined the club over the summer following a tumultuous season at Everton under Ronald Koeman and then Sam Allardyce.

His first goal came against Colorado Rapids last month, but the Englishman truly announced himself last week with a superb last ditch tackle on the half way line in injury time, with the scores level, before supplying a perfect assist to give DC United a last gasp winner. I know you’ve seen it. I’ve seen it about 50 times. Yes, we’re watching it again.

And Rooney has now reminded the world of his unquestionable prowess in front of goal, cooly sliding home an equaliser to cap off an intelligent run into the box off the defender’s shoulder.

But the best was yet to come. DC United were in front early in the second half when Rooney killed the game with a sumptuous, unstoppable free-kick, sending the MLS commentators into a rapture.

There is a fire in Rooney’s belly that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else. He could easily be on his holidays at the moment, spending time away from the limelight and with the family, but the striker doesn’t operate like that.

He has come to a club rooted to the bottom of the table, known better for failure than anything, and within the space of a few weeks has become their talisman, hauling his teammates to victory.

That spirit, that sheer determination, was always what set Rooney apart from the rest.
