<—Article Start—>Jose Mourinho is set to have the opportunity to put his summer misery behind him and receive backing in the January transfer window, according to reports.
Mourinho was desperate to bring in at least one central defender before the deadline but the club failed to swoop in time which resulted in mass criticism from supporters and even the manager himself.
It was thought that the Manchester United boss was keen to sign both Leicester City’s Harry Maguire and Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld from a list of five targets before the 2018-19 season got underway, but nothing materialised.
Now the Sun claim that the Man United board are willing to back Mourinho in January, however, won’t be held ransome over the price of their targets amidst reports Leicester value Maguire at £75m.
United’s comical defensive showing in the 3-2 loss at Brighton & Hove Albion last Sunday highlighted the need for reinforcements, but you’d expect the club would have to wait until the end of the current campaign before targets actually become available.
Mourinho has also been said to want a right-sided attacker with Internazionale’s Ivan Perisic and Chelsea’s Willian at the top of his list, but a new defender is the priority.<—Article End—>
