Manchester United to fight Arsenal for signing of Hertha Berlin’s Arne Maier – report

Manchester United are seeking a move for Hertha Berlin’s young talent Arne Maier.

Sport1, a German outlet, suggest that Man United will go head-to-head with Arsenal in pursuit of Maier, who is rated highly in Germany.

An international at under-21 level for his country, Maier has started four games for Hertha Berlin this season, predominantly in defensive midfield.

The 19-year-old has reportedly also been of interest to La Liga side FC Barcelona, earning any potential moe to United would come with the challenge of stiff competition from many others in Europe’s elite bracket.

Sport1 suggest that United and Arsenal have both sent scouts to watch Maier and send reports back, including in Hertha Berlin’s recent Dfb Pokal 2-1 victory against Eintracht Braunschweig. Maier played 90 minutes in central midfield.

Maier has a contract until 2022 in Berlin and so there is no possibility of a cheap move for either United or Arsenal. Any transfer would come with a huge price. Bundesliga clubs are fully aware that English clubs are richer than ever due to recent TV deals, and it would be negligent of them, if anything, to allow players to move to the Premier League for anything but a premium.

Maier signed his current deal back in February, having made his debut in May 2017. Since, he’s made 25 appearances for the first team, an impressive number given his position and age.
