Revealed: What Manchester United director Richard Arnold said to Jose Mourinho after Newcastle win

Jose Mourinho was given a warm hug by Manchester United’s managing director Richard Arnold following his side’s win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

The 55-year-old’s relationship with the club’s board has been severely tested by a fallow summer transfer window – during which Ed Woodward refused to grant the manager a new centre back – and a lack of public support over his feud with Paul Pogba.

Supporters have likewise grown angry with the board in recent months and chanted “Jose’s right, the board is s***e” during the 3-2 win over Newcastle.

As Mourinho conducted an interview after the game he was asked about his future and, spotting Arnold walking past, said: “Ask him”. The managing director then gave Mourinho a hug and said “well done”.

Senior officials such as Arnold remain in support of Mourinho and are keen for him to succeed at Old Trafford. The club had to publicly deny a report from David McDonnell in the Mirror stating the 55-year-old would be sacked after the Newcastle game, whatever the result, and revoked his press pass for the game the next day.

The club will no doubt meet with Mourinho over the international break ahead of a trip to Stamford Bridge and back-to-back games against Juventus in the Champions League.
