Mata and Herrera have deals which expire at the end of the season at Old Trafford and they will be free to talk to clubs from the January transfer window onwards.
The London Evening Standard reports that Mourinho sees both players as a positive influence on the Man United dressing room and so wants to keep them at the club beyond this season.
Neither midfielder has been in action frequently this season, with Herrera’s importance to Mourinho’s United side declining significantly from a couple of seasons ago where he was considered one of the Portuguese coach’s main men.
Herrera has been linked with a return to his former La Liga club Athletic Bilbao and the same is true for Mata, though with Valencia CF.
There is reportedly confidence at Old Trafford that Herrera will sign an extension at the club.
While Mourinho values his influence in the dressing room, he also sees Herrera’s versatility as a key attribute for his squad.
Mata is hugely liked by United players, coaches and fans and keeping his humility at Old Trafford can only be a good thing.
