Player ratings: Valencia 2-1 Manchester United

Player ratings: Valencia 2-1 Manchester United

Sergio Romero 5 – Totally unsighted for the first goal but Valencia’s second was a comedy of errors which, with an appropriately timed shout to Phil Jones, maybe could have been avoided.

Antonio Valencia 5 – Another frustrating performance: too slow, one-dimensional on the ball, and no real attacking intent.

Eric Bailly 6 – Defended solidly for the most part, demonstrating his physicality against Michy Batshuayi, but looked deeply uncertain in possession.

Phil Jones 4 – Delivered a classic Phil Jones moment: knocking the ball past his own keeper when a clearance away would have been just fine. A chaotic display.

Marcos Rojo 5 – Fought hard at left-back but never looked comfortable in his defensive shape, with Valencia often breaking down his side. Taken off at half time.

Marouane Fellaini 5 – A performance which underlined something we already knew: that Fellaini is not, by any stretch, a holding midfielder.

Fred 5 – Displayed impressive intent with the ball, often looking to feed through the lines, but his execution was awful. Lost possession on countless occasions and passing accuracy was nowhere to be seen.

Paul Pogba 5 – Not the performance Mourinho would have wanted. But then again: how can you perform as an attacking midfielder in a team playing so slowly?

Juan Mata 6 – Without doubt the tidiest player throughout. Moved the ball nicely and came close to scoring in the first half.

Andreas Pereira 6 – Struggled for a way into the game but, as the second half progressed, started to link up nicely with Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard when they came on.

Romelu Lukaku 5 – Demonstrated good desire leading the line, only to let himself down with his slack use of the ball.

Substitutes

Ashley Young 6 – The Englishman, at the very least, injected some tenacity into a miserable performance. Looked to play positively.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Wonderful cameo from the bench: ran hard in behind, used the ball calmly, provided edge to United’s game. Deserved his goal towards the end.

Jesse Lingard
