Ashley Young, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, David de Gea, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera to start against Liverpool – report

Ashley Young, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, David de Gea, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera are all in line to start against Liverpool on Sunday.

The sextet were all left out of the starting XI against Valencia, although Young, Lingard and Rashford came on during the second half.

Mourinho also has to contend with nine players – including Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial, Chris Smalling and Diogo Dalot – heading into the game as injury doubts.

But we do know six players who will start – and none of them are exactly surprising.

Mourinho will desperately want to restore Martial to the left hand side, affording Rashford – having scored at the Mestalla on Wednesday – a chance to play down the middle instead of Romelu Lukaku, whose form has plummeted this season.

Matic and Herrera were always going to start. The big question is whether Paul Pogba will join them. Marouane Fellaini may well be preferred, or perhaps Mourinho will prefer to use a midfield pivot with wing-backs instead.

At the back, you suspect Chris Smalling will make himself available by playing through injury, if only to avoid the prospect of Phil Jones and Eric Bailly starting together at the back once again.
