Player ratings: Liverpool 3-1 Manchester United

David de Gea 6 – Made a selection of strong diving saves throughout. Could do little about Sadio Mane’s goal and then beaten by two wicked deflections.

Diogo Dalot 6 – Struggled with the ball during a furiously paced first half but, for a debut away start in the Premier League, fought well. Taken off at half time.

Matteo Darmian 7 – Another quietly strong performance. Maintained a solid position throughout and demonstrated heart as Liverpool poured forward.

Eric Bailly 7 – Drafted in at the last minute for Chris Smalling, the Ivorian put in a superb shift for his manager, battling for every ball and even playing through injury.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Lost the ball too often in the first half but grew into the game well.

Ashley Young 6 – Played with his usual vigour and determination but, crucially, lacked discipline for both goals: in the wrong position for Mane’s goal, and not fast enough out for Xherdan Shaqiri’s strike.

Nemanja Matic 5 – Served as an effective physical buffer alongside Ander Herrera. His passing and general movement, however, was nowhere near good enough.

Ander Herrera 6 – A true ‘mad dog’ performance from the Spaniard, although his limitations at right-back – where he played for all of the second half – were on show for Liverpool’s second.

Jesse Lingard 6 – Always looked to break out and move play up the pitch for the visitors, even if his decision making was often lacking. Scored a memorable goal in front of the Kop.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Without doubt the side’s most ebullient force going forward. Played with intensity and precision, despite lacking support around him. His good form continues.

Romelu Lukaku 4 – Aside from a cross which indirectly created Lingard’s goal, the Belgian offered absolutely nothing in attack. Really poor.
