Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Matteo Darmian was a big plus for Manchester United

by Marwan Harraz

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named a surprise candidate for man of the match in the FA Cup tie vs Reading in Matteo Darmian.

The Italian has been out of favour at the club under several managers and appeared to be on his way out multiple times.

Darmian was part of the United side that kept a clean-sheet in the 2-0 win over Reading and played in his less usual role as a centre-back.

The defender’s versatility has saved his club on different occasions and with Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo all injured, he filled in to good effect.

Solskjaer gave him deserved praise as well as Matteo’s sacrifice for the first team meant Victor Lindelof got a much needed rest.

Darmian has been relentlessly linked with a move back to the Serie A since admitting he hopes to gain more match time elsewhere.

Napoli, Juventus and both Milan teams were said to have been interested in signing him on different occasions but it appears no one is willing to truly meet Manchester United’s evaluation of him.

Perhaps under Ole Matteo can reignite his career but with other players currently ahead of him for one reason or the other in three different positions, it’s rather unlikely.
