Joel Pereira set to join Reading on loan until May – report

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United goalkeeper Joel Pereira will join Reading until the end of the 2018/19 season after returning from Portuguese side Vitoria Sebutal.

Pereira spent a period of last season at Belenenses before returning to Man United as third choice keeper behind David de Gea and Sergio Romero.

It was announced on Wednesday that Pereira had returned to Manchester following an underwhelming spell at Vitoria, for whom he made ten appearances.

And according to the Mail‘s Simon Jones, United are determined to give Pereira another short-term loan in order to let the Portuguese shot-stopper gain further experience, with Reading the club in prime position to take him on board until May.

United signed veteran keeper Lee Grant over the summer to serve as third choice keeper, paving the way for Pereria to move elsewhere.

In similar fashion to former third choice Sam Johnstone at Aston Villa and then West Bromwich Albion, Pereira ought to find a loan deal which truly works for him before making the move permanent.

Alternately, Pereira could play the long game, and wait for the De Gea age to pass ahead of staking a claim for the No.1 spot between the sticks at Old Trafford. But that feels unlikely.
