Player ratings: Manchester United 2-2 Burnley

by Leo Nieboer

David de Gea 5 – What a horrible evening for the Spaniard, whose only two contributions were picking the ball out of his net from one unstoppable strike and a bullet header. Had quite literally no other saves to make.

Ashley Young 5 – Did not get the ball forward quickly enough, often failing to spot good runs in behind, and was largely at fault for Burnley’s second goal with some poor positioning at the back post.

Phil Jones 6 – A generally solid but at times erratic defensive display. Snatched at a few balls but, on the whole, dealt with Burnley’s physical presence up top.

Victor Lindelof 7 – Another elegant defensive display. Timed his challenges nicely and passed the ball into midfield, almost doubling up as an extra midfielder towards the end, before nodding home an injury time equaliser. Fantastic stuff.

Luke Shaw 6 – Enjoyed an impressive first half during which he provided most of Manchester United’s impetus going forward, only to fall short when it came to executing moves in the final third.

Nemanja Matic 5 – Much like Pereira, the Serbian was sluggish in possession. In a game demanding extra attention to high intensity football, he did not look comfortable whatsoever.

Andreas Pereira 5 – A poor showing from the Brazilian. Lacked presence in the midfield and gave away the ball for Burnley’s goal.

Paul Pogba 6 – Looked lively in the first half with a number of smart balls round the corner. By the Frenchman’s standards, though, it was a disappointing display, lacking proper execution or overall influence. Scored a well-taken penalty towards the end.

Juan Mata 5 – Got into some useful positions around the box but, frustratingly, did not have the cut and thrust to have much of an effect. Jesse Lingard’s presence on the right was certainly missed.

Marcus Rashford 6 – Displayed signs of menace to start with, tearing forward whenever he could, but the game changed he missed a huge chance to give Man United the lead. Did not have much of an impact after that moment.

Romelu Lukaku 5 – Deeply frustrating to watch. Failed to provide consistently useful moment and had very little presence in the box, coming off for Sanchez after an hour.
