Official: Ashley Young signs contract extension with Manchester United until 2020

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United have confirmed Ashley Young has signed a one-year contract extension keeping him at the club until 2020.

The 33-year-old, somewhat out of nowhere, became a regular starter under Jose Mourinho last season and played an important role in England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals in Russia.

Young is another player to have benefited from the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has started him at right-back in nine of his 11 games as caretaker manager.

The club confirmed on Monday that Young had agreed to extend his future at the club until 2020, which means the Englishman would have been at Old Trafford for almost a decade.

Young, unlike fellow 33-year-old full-back Antonio Valencia, has managed to evolve with the times under Solksjaer.

While the Ecuadorian looks to be slowly grinding to a painful halt, Young’s dynamism and maturity in the full-back role appears to have blossomed since last season.

Young has for some time been valuable to the dressing room – a senior figure, roundly liked by his teammates, who played under Sir Alex Ferguson and, as such, knows what to expect from a United player.

That mentality shows itself in big games. And he will need to be at his disciplined best against Paris Saint Germain.
