Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard are out for two to three weeks

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard will be out for up to three weeks after sustaining injuries during Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint Germain.

The pair were both forced off just before half time against the French champions, who took advantage of the absent duo in the second half by scoring twice in seven minutes.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Solskjaer had bad news: Martial and Lingard could be out for up to three weeks, ruling them out of Chelsea on Monday, Liverpool next Sunday, and possibly the return leg against PSG in March.

Man United’s medical staff are cautious to avoid aggravating the injuries too soon. Martial’s knock, according to the Telegraph, stems from a prior problem which precluded him from playing regular games earlier this season.

You would think having Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez – one a £90m striker and the other winger on £500,000-a-week – waiting in the wings would ameliorate this sudden injury blow, but no.

Put simply, United have lost two crucial players at an even more crucial time. And there is little optimism among supporters that others can step in and maintain the same level. Perhaps Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes (Mason Greenwood is injured too, would you believe) bring some much needed vitality to an attacking lineup which suddenly feels quite scant.
