From Holland: Ajax targeting Timothy Fosu-Mensah as Matthijs de Ligt replacement

by Leo Nieboer

Ajax are lining up Timothy Fosu-Mensah as a long-term replacement for outgoing defender Matthis de Ligt, according to reports from Holland.

The defender came through the ranks at Ajax before joining Man United in 2014, making his senior debut for the club in February 2016.

He enjoyed a decent run of games under Louis van Gaal but was loaned out to Crystal Palace in 2017, where he enjoyed a successful spell. His current loan club, Fulham, has not yielded as much joy.

And according to leading Dutch media outlet De Telegraaf, contact has been made between Ajax and Fosu-Mensah’s representatives over a potential move back to Amsterdam. The club, having agreed a deal with Barcelona to sell Frenkie de Jong in January, accept that defender De Ligt will become the next academy starlet to leave for pastures new.

United and Ajax did business over the summer for Daley Blind’s move back to Amsterdam, and enjoy a relatively close working relationship, with former keeper Edwin van der Saar serving as the current chief executive.

Fosu-Mensah looked delightfully competent as an 18-year-old in the United team and demonstrated maturity at Palace last season. Some supporters may be against losing such a promising player – and great personality – on a permanent basis.
