by Leo Nieboer

David de Gea 5 – Bad day for the Spaniard. Totally misjudged Granit Xhaka’s long-range shot and never looked like saving Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s penalty.

Ashley Young 6 – Begun the game quite shabbily, often losing the ball in key positions, but tightened things up in the second half.

Chris Smalling 7 – Another very strong defensive performance for the Englishman on his 200th Premier League appearance. Very rarely let Arsenal through down his channel.

Victor Lindelof 5 – A rare shaky game from the Swede, who looked jittery with the ball to start with and never really recovered. Nearly let Alexandre Lacazette score in the second half after misjudging the flight of a long ball.

Luke Shaw 6 – Once again the best passer out of defence, feeding play through the channels efficiently. Could have been more responsive to Arsenal’s passing into the box.

Nemanja Matic 5 – Looked rusty whenever placed under pressure having just returned from injury. Sat off Arsenal’s midfielders too much and, while improving in the second half, not good enough with his passing.

Fred 6 – A mixed performance from the Brazilian: produced some truly encouraging pieces of play in the middle and pressed well, but nonetheless looked slightly rough around the edges. Gave away a soft penalty to kill the game.

Paul Pogba 5 – Enjoyed plenty of touches and treated supporters to some fantastic passes, but the final product was not there. Frustrating game.

Diogo Dalot 6 – Once again supremely energetic. Did not get many touches in the first half but always looked to burst forward down the right. Supplied some good crosses.

Marcus Rashford 5 – After the euphoria of Paris, this felt like something of a comedown. Took up good positions, yet his decision making and execution had lethargy written all over it. Needs a rest.

Romelu Lukaku 6 – Genuinely one of Lukaku’s best ever games in terms of hold-up play and general involvement. Played with real conviction. His finishing, however, was poor: missed three big chances to score at crucial times.
