Player ratings: Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

David de Gea 5 – Not a good day for the Spaniard. Fumbled an easy ball in the second half, nearly allowing Wolves to score, and lacked command for their second goal.

Diogo Dalot 6 – Encouraging display from the youngster. Bombed forward with skill and vigour, supplying a few dangerous crosses. Lacked discipline at the back occasionally.

Chris Smalling 5 – Did not inspire confidence when Wolves came forward, especially against the lively Diego Jota. Scored an own goal, somewhat summing up the chaos he brings in games like these.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Could have been sharper on the ball at times but his positioning in and around the box was astute.

Ashley Young 4 – Deployed on the right hand side of a back three and, put simply, it did not work. So predictable on the ball, shaky off it, and sent off before the hour mark for two yellow cards.

Luke Shaw 6 – Another dedicated performance down the left. Defended in a tight and calm manner for the most part. Sought to provide some thrust on the ball but delivery was poor.

Fred 6 – Made a poor mistake which led to Wolves equalising but his performance was actually quite encouraging. Moved the ball nicely and made a couple of good tackles.

Scott McTominay 6 – A momentous day for the Scot, who scored his first ever senior Manchester United goal, lashing into the bottom corner from outside the box. Good commitment throughout, getting into good positions further forward. Nearly scored another, only to be denied by a good save.

Paul Pogba 5 – A performance similar to the one at Wolves last month. Looked to take the initiative with the ball but never seemed to find good positions. Passing in short spaces was poor.

Romelu Lukaku 5 – Missed a huge chance to head Man United into the lead in the first five minutes and did nothing after that. A class Bad Romelu Lukaku Performance.

Jesse Lingard 4 – Buzzed around the pitch with no clear purpose at all. Hardly seemed to touch the ball.
