Manchester United face fight with Manchester City for Joao Cancelo: report

Manchester United are reportedly set to fight fierce rivals Manchester City for the signature of Juventus’ Joao Cancelo.

The Portuguese has emerged as a target of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s who is said to be on the look-out for defensive options.

While reports claim he’s looking to add a centre-back to his squad, there’s a belief that his priorities are more so on the full-back positions.

With Antonio Valencia departing and Ashley Young declining incredibly, fans expect the right-back position in particular to be addressed.

Cancelo would certainly be an upgrade on United’s current options but there didn’t appear to be any real reason for him to depart Italy until now.

According to the Daily Mail, Tuttosport report that Max Allegri wasn’t convinced by Joao’s performances and so Juventus are ready to sell him for at least £53m, though the Red Devils will have to fight off their rivals’ interest for his signature.

Bringing in the defender raises question marks over Diogo Dalot’s future who supporters felt deserved time to develop.

Cancelo’s introduction to the squad will likely heavily influence the youngsters minutes particularly if Young is retained for the next season.

Either way, if Manchester City are truly in for the former Valencia man then it will be difficult to compete with their finances, trophies and Champions League football.
