Manchester United have reportedly targeted Barcelona star Samuel Umtiti as their main centre-back summer signing.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be keen on investing in his defence given how leaky they were last season and so chasing the Frenchman makes sense.
However, the World Cup winner does not suit the Norwegian’s transfer policy of young British talent and so there are question marks over the legitimacy of the interest.
It could be that Umtiti’s ability is too tempting for Solskjaer to ignore and his United side are in desperate need of a leader in the backline.
It’s not the first time the centre-back was linked with a move to Old Trafford but the last time that happened, he ended up renewing his contract.
According to the Mirror, Mundo Deportivo report that the Red Devils’ interest in Samuel comes after failing to land other targets and the player could be convinced to move for first-team football as Barcelona look set to cut their losses after his injury ravaged season.
The Spanish side are believed to be keen on Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt so perhaps this is their way of killing two birds with one stone.
Whatever the case, Umtiti would certainly be an upgrade on Manchester United’s current options though his fitness is definitely a concern.
