Wayne Rooney encourages Jadon Sancho to shun Manchester United this summer

by Leo Nieboer

Wayne Rooney has encouraged Jadon Sancho to remain at Borussia Dortmund and optimise his minutes on the pitch instead of joining Manchester United this summer.

The 19-year-old cemented himself as one of Europe’s brightest young prospects last season, scoring 12 goals and registering 14 assists in 34 Bundesliga appearances.

Man United were strongly linked with Sancho throughout the 2018-19 campaign, although their pursuit of the youngster was damaged by missing out on Champions League football next season.

Speaking to German media outlet Bild, Rooney stressed to Sancho the importance of getting as many minutes under your belt as a youngster rather than moving to a bigger club.

“Dortmund is a great club with great fans, they trust their young players and you can see that in Sancho and the progress he has made in the last 12 months,” he said.

“Now Jadon has to ask himself whether he would get the playing time he gets in Dortmund when he moves to England, or would he just sit on the bench?

“Playing time is so important for a young player like Jadon, so if he gets the most playing time in Dortmund, he should stay there.”

Sancho is expected to stay put at the Signal Iduna Park for at least another season. He is enjoying life in Germany and Dortmund hope to see him play an important role at the club over the next year.

United’s acquisition of right-sided winger Daniel James for £15m earlier this summer indicates a cooling of interest towards Sancho, who is valued at around £70m by Dortmund.
