Aaron Wan-Bissaka produces indomitable defensive performance in first Manchester United appearance

by Leo Nieboer

Aaron Wan-Bissaka produced an excellent defensive display on his first outing in a Manchester United shirt since signing from Crystal Palace.

The 21-year-old became Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s second signing as Man United manager last month, arriving for £45m plus a further £5m in add-ons.

Known for his raw energy and supreme tackling ability, the youngster has been considered a vital addition to this United team – so devoid of actual full-backs for so long – by supporters even before the 2018/19 campaign was over.

And his first performance in a United shirt brought exactly what supporters had been dreaming of – a genuine, honest-to-god-actually-quite-good full-back putting in brilliant tackles.

Wan-Bissaka did not have much defending to do against a meagre Perth side, but whenever a purple shirt came near him, his response was exemplary.

You can see why his Crystal Palace teammates called him ‘Spider’. Blessed with deceptively ferocious pace and a gangly frame, Wan-Bissaka, on five separate occasions, flew across the attacker and perfectly knocked the ball out of his stride. He brings eloquence and skill to the position of the Neville brothers – or, as has been the case for so long, the Antonio Valencia role.

Supporters will expect Wan-Bissaka to make that spot his own over the summer.
