David de Gea being considered for Manchester United captaincy

by Marwan Harraz

One of Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s toughest decisions ahead of the new season has to be who will be the club’s official new captain.

Former captain Antonio Valencia moved on after the expiration of his contract this summer though Ashley Young stepped in more often than not with the armband.

Jose Mourinho opted for a similar strategy of alternating who he would give the captaincy to depending on who was available.

Although Solskjaer has done the same thing so far, it seems he’s set to name an official captain once and for all.

United’s squad has been heavily criticised for its lack of leadership and so it’s a decision that will be tough to call correctly.

According to The Times, David de Gea is one of the main candidates to become captain next season though Paul Pogba, Young, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling are all under consideration too.

The lack of leadership is actually believed to be one of the reasons Ole is looking to bring in Leicester City’s Harry Maguire.

The towering centre-back would probably not be handed the captain’s armband right away but he would add necessary leadership skills to Manchester United’s otherwise leaky back four.
