Scott McTominay ambitious despite Manchester United’s desire for new midfielders

Manchester United star Scott McTominay is hugely optimistic over the coming season and has revealed what role he prefers to play in midfield.

The sensational youngster has looked sharp in pre-season with his performances suggesting he may be the best partner for Paul Pogba.

Nemanja Matic, Andreas Pereira and Fred are United’s remaining options in the engine room, hence their links to signing the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Sean Longstaff.

However, McTominay has sent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a message by claiming he’s ready to take advantage of any opportunities that come his way despite the likelihood of at least one midfielder coming in before the summer transfer window ends.

The Red Devils are believed to be busy at the moment with trying to drag Harry Maguire away from Leicester City so perhaps the Scottish prospect has time to make an even bigger impact.

According to the Evening Standard, Scott said: “That’s always been my goal. It’s my ambition to be a regular No6, No8, a box to box player.

“It’s important that I really go for that now. Obviously there is an opportunity there and you’ve got to take it with both hands.

“Last year I had some decent performances and it’s important that I carry on from that.”

There’s no reason to believe McTominay can’t prove to be the ideal Manchester United midfielder but there are question marks over whether he’s ready to do that right now.

Solskjaer’s midfield is arguably his weakest position with only Paul Pogba the star player in the middle of the park.

Even United’s defence is overstocked with central-defenders so at least there’s depth in comparison to the midfield.
