Matteo Darmian set for free transfer to Inter Milan next summer – report

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Inter Milan for the free transfer of Matteo Darmian to the San Siro once the Italian’s contract expires next summer, according to a report in Italy.

Darmian has been linked with a return to his homeland for three transfer windows in a row as he becomes a growingly peripheral figure at Old Trafford.

Having made 28 Premier League appearances in his first season at Man United, Darmian has been reduced to just 14 league appearances over two campaigns.

And according to Rai Sport, Antonio Conte has given Darmian an exit route out of United after Inter agreed to take the 29-year-old on a free transfer once his current contract expired in June 2020.

Juventus were another club said to be interested, and even Barcelona was linked with a shock move for Darmian, which would have been truly hilarious.

The Italian cuts a ghostly figure at the Theatre of Dreams, sometimes appearing at times of injury crisis (like against Liverpool last season, when he actually played very well), before disappearing into the ether again.

On a technical level, he does not quite cut it, but the Italian has been a model professional for his five years at United. Not once has even the hint of a scandal followed him.
