Aaron Wan-Bissaka: Wingers hate being slide-tackled

by Marwan Harraz

Manchester United star Aaron Wan-Bissaka has revealed how his former days as a winger helps him almost always beat his opponents.

The sensational full-back has a ridiculous record in terms of tackling as well as his one vs one duels.

United fans have thoroughly enjoyed seeing Wan-Bissaka consistently win his battles as it’s something they’ve previously been starved from.

Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian and Diogo Dalot all enjoyed far less success rates and it’s tough to imagine any of the trio overtaking the former Crystal Palace man in the pecking order.

Wan-Bissaka will be coming up against his former team with the Red Devils playing hosts on Saturday afternoon with a win needed to put behind last week’s disappointing draw with Wolves.

According to the club’s official website, Wan-Bissaka said: “I love tackles, man. I want to come out with the most tackles from each game; that’s my aim.

“I’m not really happy when I come out of a game without many tackles. At the same time, when I look back at it, it doesn’t mean anything negative, necessarily – it might mean that the winger’s not confident to keep on coming at me, for me to have the chance to tackle him.

“Wingers hate it. When I was a winger, I hated being tackled! When I attempted to beat a player and he slide-tackled me, I’d just think: ‘I don’t want to go down there again,’ and change the route, change my play, you know?”

For all his obvious talent, if one were to be too critical, it could be said Wan-Bissaka needs to work on the attacking side of his game.

It appears strange to ask a former winger to bomb down the flanks more often but it is what’s needed of the talented Englishman in order to become a complete full-back.

That’s not to say Wan-Bissaka doesn’t already get forward at all but it’s clear he could overlap more often than he does, particularly since the deliveries he puts in from out wide are normally pretty good.
