Mason Greenwood could start for Manchester United against Southampton – report

by Leo Nieboer

Mason Greenwood has travelled with the Manchester United squad to Southampton and could start the game at St Mary’s, according to a report.

The 17-year-old, who made his senior debut at the Parc des Princes in March, impressed supporters more than any other player during the club’s pre-season tour.

Following Anthony Martial’s injury, along with Alexis Sanchez following Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer only has a select few options in attack.

According to Manchester Evening News, there is a genuine chance of Greenwood starting the game.

Greenwood has so far featured from the bench this season, but as Solskjaer has emphasised on several occasions, the teenager is more than ready.

His performance against Cardiff City in May, after all, was the only one which did not belong in a dustbin, and after a performance as paltry in attacking terms as the one against Crystal Palace, an injection of the Englishman’s raw fearlessness, the kind you only have when your career is yet to truly begin, would not only make sense but perhaps be rendered necessary by Solskjaer.

Greenwood will be starting games for United in the Premier League sooner rather than later. St Mary’s seems like the ideal time to start.
