Mason Greenwood withdrawn from England U21 squad with back injury

by Leo Nieboer

Mason Greenwood has been withdrawn from international duty this week after suffering a back injury during Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday.

The 18-year-old, who has two goals for the club so far this season, was introduced during the latter stages as Man United miserably failed to grab an equaliser.

Greenwood, along with academy stars Axel Tuanzebe, Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong and Brandon Williams, has been championed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer so far this term.

However, it has been confirmed that the teenager has a fresh injury after Newcastle, adding to Solskjaer’s injury woes.

Heading into the international break, United’s injury list is as follows: Greenwood, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, Jesse Lingard, Diogo Dalot, Eric Bailly, and Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

A good deal of those – the first five mentioned – are expected to return in time for Liverpool, but no club should have that many continuous niggles at the start of October. Too many players, as Jose Mourinho once said during his time at Old Trafford, are “permanently injured”.
