Marcus Rashford reveals desire of chasing trophies over top four spot

by Marwan Harraz

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has suggested he would take trophies without top four spot rather than no trophies but top four spot.

Debate over this topic has gone on endlessly ever since the end of Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign but it’s especially relevant this season.

United began the season poorly and have played inconsistently so far with some suggesting they may even miss out of Europe entirely.

Some fans want to aim for a top four spot and deem that a success but some claim winning the Europa League again or any cup trophy and miss out on a top four spot can also be deemed a success.

The sensational academy product has explained his side of things and it can be seen just how much winning trophies means to players.

According to Sky Sports, Rashford said: “Manchester United have always got to chase trophies”.

“I think it’s been 18 months [actually two-and-a-half years] since we won our last trophy so it’s been a while. If we come out of this season with top four but without a trophy, I wouldn’t be happy.

“If we manage to get some trophies and get ourselves into the top four then, of course, it has been a successful season.

“For me it is just about putting markers down for what we can do in the future because we know that this period is not going to change overnight, Ole’s not going to get what he wants overnight.

“We have to bide our time and just be patient, as long as we keep working hard and believe in what we are doing – which I think the team do 100 per cent – then I think we will be fine.”

Perhaps Rashford will feel otherwise next season but there are fans who believe anything less than top four is an unsuccessful season given Manchester United’s recent history with qualifying only for the Europa League.

A top four spot is certainly achievable if the team can gain some momentum and stay far away from injuries to key players again but it is a big if.

Chelsea, Leicester City, Manchester City and Liverpool all seem to have a lock down on the top four spots in terms of quality of football this season but not necessarily on points.

United are only nine points away from their city rivals who are in fourth place and there’s still a long way to go in the campaign.

It’s also noteworthy that Rashford and co defeated Chelsea and Leicester already and narrowly missed out on beating Liverpool.
