Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Harry Maguire is improving

by Marwan Harraz

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has defended Harry Maguire following major criticism over his form following a poor start to the campaign.

There are many who still hold reservations over the English defender but he was particularly struggling at the start of the season for club and country.

However, it’d be unfair to say he hasn’t since improved since, with Solskjaer choosing to play him out of his poor form.

Maguire joined from Leicester City in the summer of 2019 when he was considered to be amongst the best in the league.

Unfortunately for him, he joined for what was a world-record fee for a centre-back and that placed ridiculously high expectations on him.

Maguire’s impact on the team cannot be ignored as Manchester United’s defensive stats have tremendously improved since his arrival.

It’s also said that behind the scenes he’s a brilliant captain and leader and has played a big role in transforming the dressing room atmosphere.

The reservations that hang over his head have to do with his lack of acceleration, which leaves him exposed when United play a high line, and a tendency to be rash at times.

Solskjaer is clearly a fan of Maguire and given how much he spent on the defender, it’s unlikely he’s going anytime soon, as much as some fans may want.

United have had some world class goalkeepers over the years and some entertaining ones too. Take our quiz below to find out how much you know about United’s number 1’s, past and present.
