Barcelona claim Thiago has not asked to join Manchester United

by Sam Peoples

Barcelona have not been informed by Thiago Alcantara that he wants a move away from the club according to a spokesman for the board.

The 22-year-old has quickly become the transfer story of the summer so far after his outstanding performances at the U21 European Championships saw interest mount from Manchester United due to his €18 million release clause.

And while there has been plenty of unofficial discussion about the move, Toni Freixa has said that nothing has been discussed between Thiago and Barcelona yet when asked about the current situation.

“There’s no news,” he said.

“He has a contract and didn’t say anything, so he’s still a Barça player now”.

Despite no official confirmation from either club, there has been plenty of building interest elsewhere.

Thiago reportedly visited Manchester with his father to discuss terms with United while the likes of Cruyff and Giggs have both spoken publicly about him.

Only last week, his brother Rafinha signed a new deal that will see him at the club for at least three years so Barcelona are certainly in contact with the Thiago camp about his future.

He returned from holiday this week and with pre-season coming up fast, United are likely to make an official move if all of this interest is genuine.

One fan has claimed that De Gea told him Thiago would join United while speculation also mounted from a scribble on his hat-trick ball from the U21 final saying ‘See you in Manchester’ and he has already donned the United shirt earlier in his life.

Reports from ESPN claim that Thiago is chasing a similar release clause in a potential contract with United to ensure the same lack of game time won’t happen at Old Trafford but given our midfield situation, Thiago will be one of the most important players in the squad.

He needs the game time to try and force his way into the Spain side for Brazil’s 2014 World Cup and it is something he will get at United more than anywhere else.
