Christmas 1979 and revenge for the cup final loss. Watch Ray Wilkins eclipse Liam Brady with some lovely midfield play. Pat Jennings saved Arsenal from a heavier defeat foiling Macari and Thomas. Football as it was meant to be. A snow-covered pitch, solid tackles, and some great skills on display.
1966-67 season. Two weeks before this game, United signed Alex Stepney from Chelsea. Liverpool were the reigning champions and Harry Gregg was getting on a bit and David Gaskell was not cutting it between the sticks. This was Stepney's second league game for us but we went to Forest the week after and lost to our title challengers 1-4.
April 1965 and we were neck and neck with Leeds United for the title. Goals were needed so Liverpool obliged. We ended up champions by virtue of goal average as it was then, being level on points with Leeds after we blew the final game at Villa 1-2.
November 1973. Tommy Docherty had convinced George Best to make a comeback and here he makes an appearance at home against Chelsea. We were 0-2 down with about 5 minutes left, the stands were emptying out leaving the Stretford End and the Paddock to stick it out to the bitter end. But what a last 5 minutes it was.
Chelsea at home again, but this time from March 1965 and the run-in to the title. Getting through an iffy patch of form, we scored 11 goals in three games, conceding just the one against Fulham. Those goals were crucial as we won the title from Leeds on goal average as it was in those days. Watch the first scored by Best. A real piece of magic.
Edit: We scored 89 goals and conceded 39. Leeds scored 83 and conceded 52 and that with, arguably, a stronger defence than us.
Estudiantes at home in the World Club Championship game. It was a fiasco. Interesting to see it again after all these years. The away game was brutal and this wasn't much better. Seba Veron's father scored for them and Willie Morgan for us. We did get the ball in the net but the final whistle had blown. Best was sent off and Stepney got into a ruck with one of their forwards.
