Four Manchester United lions called up for England duty

Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney have all been called up by Roy Hodgson for the upcoming World Cup 2014 qualifiers against San Marino and Poland.

Speaking to Manutd.com last week about his return to the England setup, Michael Carrick couldn’t hide his pleasure.

He said: “Now I’m really pleased to be back in the England plans. I’m looking to be part of things and get as many games as I can.

“I’m still only 31 so I don’t want to hang up boots yet. If I can still play a part in England’s big matches that’s something I’d love to do.

“The new manager seems to want me involved at the moment, so hopefully I can do enough to stay in his plans.”

Wayne Rooney makes his return to the squad after being omitted by his gash injury whilst Cleverley and Welbeck continue to hold onto their England spots. Cleverley in particular has been impressing recently for club and country, so hopefully the trend won’t change.

Unsurprisingly, Rio Ferdinand has been omitted by Roy Hodgson despite John Terry not being in the squad anymore but it is only a good thing for Ferdinand and Manchester United.

It effectively closes the door on his England career but with niggling injuries always cropping up, Ferdinand will be able to extend his club playing career by not playing for England. Although I don’t agree with his treatment by The FA, this should work out in his favour.

With two home fixtures against Stoke and SC Braga the following two matches after the international break, it shouldn’t have a negative effect on us so long as no injuries happen. Touch wood.

England will play San Marino at Wembley on October 12 before travelling to Poland on October 16.
