Herrera wonder goal adds to his rising stock ahead of expected move

Manchester United have been strongly linked to Pachucha midfielder Hector Herrera ahead of an expected move to European football and the midfielder added to his rising stock with a sublime goal for Pachucha this week.

 

The goal demonstrated not only great pace, especially for a central midfielder, but also some world-class finishing. The cheeky chipped finish shows exactly why Herrera has been tipped for a big move.

In truth, it has been a whirlwind 18 months for the talented 22-year-old Mexican who only made his debut in July 2011. Just over a year later, the central midfielder Herrera finished the domestic season by picked up the Golden Ball for best ‘rookie’ of the year award, and was celebrating victory over Brazil as Mexico claimed Olympic gold at London 2012.

“A combative, all-action midfielder – box to box, who is not afraid to put his foot in – although probably not his finest asset. He is a good all-rounder, with skill and who can pass.” Sky Sports

It comes as no surprise then that Herrera is likely to leave Mexico in the next six months with United, Lyon and Porto all being touted as possible destinations for the Pachuca midfielder.

Pachuca sporting director Andrés Fassi seems resigned to losing the exciting prospect. Back in August, he said: “We want him to continue with Pachuca. But when he decides to leave, the club will give him the opportunity to do so.”

And club president Jesus Martinez told ESTO that Pachuca plan to sell Herrera in the summer of 2013.

The Guardian reported that United made an enquiry in the summer and many media outlets had speculated that the deal was virtually done.

Midfield has been an issue for the club in recent seasons with Paul Scholes brought back into the fold last January and Darren Fletcher looking a shadow of his former self. Furthermore, Anderson has experienced another injury hit campaign.

In truth, United’s midfield issues are far less pronounced than some proclaim with some making out that the teams engine room is as weak as Liverpool’s title challenge, The blossoming partnership of Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick is finally bringing some stability to a midfield that has been makeshift for many years.

Herrera would certainly bring something different to the club however, as United have lacked a true box-to-box midfielder since legendary captain Roy Keane left the club.
