Moyes admits transfers could determine his job at Manchester United

“Developing players mentally is very important, but it needs to fit with what the players want. You have to keep your eye on what the industry is doing — what’s new. And your recruiting as a manager can determine whether you keep your job.” David Moyes

David Moyes has emphasised the hard work that is ahead for the staff and players at Manchester United, and admits that his movement in the summer window could determine his position next season.

Moyes officially takes charge of Manchester United on July 1 from Sir Alex Ferguson and has already begun work behind the scenes with plenty of back room staff changes.

And heading towards his first pre-season with the club, the 50-year-old Scot has made clear his intentions to lay down a strict work ethic.

“You have to earn your stars when dealing with players. It’s up to you to show what you’ve got,” he said.

“If you want to work for me, you need to be able to work seven days a week. I need to know my staff will give me that effort.”

It is clear that Moyes will walk into Old Trafford with a no nonsense attitude towards player commitment and the signings he makes will certainly play a big role in how successful his first season is.

United have needed a midfielder for a few years now but with strong links to the likes of Strootman and Fellaini, it seems that we may finally bring some physicality to a midfield that has lacked it so badly.

And one aspect to Moyes’ ethic that is pleasing to hear is his belief in promoting youth which should carry on one of United’s most long standing club traditions.

“Discipline has to come from within for players. And I’m a great believer in giving young players opportunities.

“Developing players mentally is very important, but it needs to fit with what the players want. You have to keep your eye on what the industry is doing — what’s new. And your recruiting as a manager can determine whether you keep your job.”

“It’s a great honour to be appointed at Manchester United. But don’t assume your board of directors always have the answers. You need to influence.”

Moyes will have inherit one of the best  youth set-ups in the country with the U21s reigning Premier League champions and the U18s fourth best in the country.

With the likes of Januzaj, Cole and Keane all pushing for spots in the first team squad and burgeoning talents such as Daehli and Pearson progressing rapidly, there is a plethora of hungry youngsters ready to bite at the heels of the senior side.

It is going to be exciting to see what Moyes does in his first season as manager and from first impressions, he has all the hallmarks of being the perfect manager to replace the irreplaceable.
