Nick Powell: A star in the making

by jonnyescott

Young summer signing Nick Powell last night scooped the League Two Player of the Year Award at the North West Football Awards after a highly successful season at his boyhood club, Crewe Alexandra. Powell beat off competition from Chris McCready of Morecambe and Padraig Amond of Accrington Stanley to claim the award for a season in which he was Crewe’s top scorer with 16 goals. Powell ended his long standing relationship with Crewe in an emphatic style scoring an unbelievable half volley that set them on their way to a 2-0 win over Cheltenham Town in the League Two Play-Off Final at Wembley.

Nick Powell started his career at Crewe when he joined their youth system at the age of five. From there he progressed through the ranks at Crewe Alexandra and deservedly got a call up to the England Under 16 squad in 2009 when he was 15. He has now represented England at every youth level and is in line to make his England Under 21 debut tonight in a friendly against noisy neighbours Northern Ireland at Bloomfield Road.

After his move to Manchester United was finalised on the 1st July 2012, Nick Powell was swiftly involved in Sir Alex Ferguson’s plans and was selected for the pre-season tour with the senior squad where he made his debut coming on a substitute against South African outfit Ajax Cape Town.

He then continued to impress the United faithful when he made his senior professional debut against Wigan, coming on for Ryan Giggs in the 71st minute and with only 11 minutes of top flight football under his belt, Powell cleverly found space on the edge of the Wigan Athletic penalty area and blasted a shot which was just too powerful for the hands of Ali Al Habsi, capping off a comfortable 4-0 victory for United.

His progress has been fantastic already in his short United career and if he continues to impress for the Under 21s, Sir Alex may take it upon himself to use players like Powell in the remaining two group games of the UEFA Champions League as a top place finish has already been guaranteed. The future is certainly bright for Powell who is sure to continue to reap the rewards and hopefully, the award he won last night is just the start of what will one day be an extremely busy trophy cabinet in the Nick Powell household.
