Player Ratings: Manchester United 1-2 West Brom

by Sam Peoples

David De Gea 6: De Gea couldn’t do anything about either of West Brom’s goals after two excellent finishes from the Baggies. Made a brilliant save to tip a free-kick over the bar.

Alexander Buttner 4: Buttner was very poor against West Brom. He repeatedly walked out of position and left our centre-backs exposed against a pacey and up for it West Brom attack. Buttner simply doesn’t have the quality to be a United player.

Rio Ferdinand 4: Ferdinand is really in a rut right now. He was cut open by West Brom and nutmegged in the lead-up to both of their goals. Found himself regularly chasing the tail of their attackers and so far this season, Ferdinand has been poor for United.

Jonny Evans 5: After a great performance against Liverpool, Evans was rusty in a United defence that looked weak all over. Up against the powerful Victor Anichebe, Nemanja Vidic may have been a better choice.

Phil Jones 5: Jones isn’t a right back but he’ll continue to be used there as and when Moyes sees fit. Played well to support Nani on the right wing and put in a couple of good tackles but like Buttner, he left his position exposed too often.

Michael Carrick 5: Where’s Carrick gone? He has started this season off slowly in comparison to how good he was last year. Carrick is usually the ever reliable presence in United’s midfield but hasn’t managed to continue his form from 2012 so far.

Anderson 5: Anderson made only his second start to the campaign and failed to impress. Had some attacking endeavour but left huge spaces that West Brom exploited to run straight at our defence. Too interested going forward and didn’t do his defensive duties.

Shinji Kagawa 6: Kagawa made his second start within a week and played well. He was one of the few positives from United’s first half but Moyes decided to take him off in a tactical substitution for Adnan Januzaj which Kagawa could have felt hard done by.

Nani 7: United’s best player on the day. There was little attacking purpose from our side but Nani was at the forefront of most of it. He was direct and had a good game by all accounts.

Wayne Rooney 7: Another game and another goal from Wayne with his free-kick going straight in after a great delivery into the box that missed everyone. Again, he put everything into the game and his commitment was there but he couldn’t inspire United to turn it around.

Javier Hernandez 6: Hernandez played brilliant in midweek against Liverpool but he couldn’t replicate that form against West Brom. Nearly scored early on but rarely threatened thereafter. His first touch alluded him at times as did his timing with some offside runs.

Substitutes

Adnan Januzaj 7: Januzaj came on for Kagawa at half time and played very well after a poor first touch that almost led to a West Brom chance. Once again, played with a confidence beyond his years. Looked like he belonged in the first team.

Marouane Fellaini 5: Fellaini tried to come on and influence the game but wasn’t able to. If he had held his run, his offside equaliser late on may have made all the difference.

Robin van Persie 6: United’s potency in front of goal is limited when van Persie is out but even when he came on, he couldn’t turn it around. Clearly not match fit but Moyes needed to use him.
