Ronaldinho – If United had signed me, they would have won more European Cups

by Tom Parker

Former A.C Milan and Barcelona superstar Ronaldinho has sensationally claimed that Manchester United would have won more Champions League’s had he joined the club in an interview with the Daily Mail.

Ronaldinho, who is in England this week having been named in Luis Felipe Scolari’s Brzail squad to face England on Wednesday, as part of the F.A’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Speaking to SportsMail, Ronaldinho admitted he was closest to joining the Premier League for Manchester United in the past.

“Yes, that was the only time it has been a real option. If Manchester United had signed me, they would have won more European cups,” he said.

This of course relates to Ronaldinho’s protracted move to Manchester United in 2003. After David Beckham left United in 2003, Sir Alex Ferguson set his sights on the then PSG player and World Cup winner before he joined Barcelona. The failure to conclude a deal for Ronaldinho was at the time blamed on then chief executive Peter Kenyon.

However, it is important to point out that had United signed Ronaldinho, a certain teenage Cristiano Ronaldo would likely have not joined the club and he didn’t turn out too badly.

Ronaldinho was also asked about his favourite English players and said:

“Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and Wayne Rooney – all players who at their peak would have got into any team in the world.”

The 32-year-old Ballon D’Or winner was effusive in praise for Wayne Rooney when asked whether the United forward could get into the Brazil team.

“Rooney is a player I like – there is not a national squad in the world he would not improve.”

Ronaldinho, who was considered among the best in world football during his Barcelona years is likely to appear for Brazil on Wednesday where Chris Smalling, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley are all likely to face against him at Wembley.
